Chapter 6

Eilo’s chest heaved. He was struggling to draw breath, but he kept going. He sucked at the early morning air to get any oxygen that was hanging around into his lungs. His face was completely flush and beads of sweat rolled off the top of his nose. He wiped it away with another one to appear immediately, as if trying to clear the drips from a leaky tap faucet. He hadn’t trained this hard since basic training, in fact he had never trained this hard. And he loved it. This morning was another obstacle course round. They had been training for three days straight since Suzee had convinced Ana to extend the plan out for a few more days and allow the team to get tactics, formation and fitness to the best level they could. Talence’s team were powerful and aggressive but lacked some tactical nous. On the other hand the Outsiders crew and Simmins needed some training and nutrition after the ordeal of the last few weeks but had become the defacto tactical leaders.

Eilo and Jonez had been last on the obstacle course on the first day. This made sense to Eilo as he was always the least developed of the crew and it probably made sense that, even with the clone chamber, Jonez may have some lingering injuries. Over the three days, though, Eilo had moved up to the middle of the pack and some of Talence’s crew were starting to show him signs of respect with a regular pat on the back or a thumbs up. Talence, by his own admission, had hardened his crew to a point that it was difficult to crack the shell. They had all heard stories about this weedy looking guy and what he had been through. Torture, banishment and combat seemed almost unbelievable. So unbelievable they had to experience it for themselves. He had started to show some of that metal by holding his own on the toughest obstacle course he had ever attempted. Maybe this guy had something about him after all.

To contrast that the muscular framed, scar faced Jonez had a warrior look about him, a man not to be trifled with. Judging by the stories he had not been through anything worse than Eilo, and he had years of hardship to toughen his mental and physical skin to anything thrown at him. But he was a shadow of himself on the course and people were starting to talk. Was he passed his best? Had he been broken by the Corporation? Eilo tried to stay with him as much as possible but this pissed Jonez off as it just shone a bigger light on his poor physical performances. They had a falling out on the last drill from the day before and Eilo was trying to give him a wide berth. But Jonez wouldn't let him. At every drill he got close to him, eyeballing him but not saying a word. During the pushups drill he did twenty more, pull ups ten more, sprint three seconds faster.
